NORFOLK SURNAMES: E

EASTON:
EASTON as a name usually derives from a person who has come from a place of that name. The actual place name is a simple version of tun for settlement or enclosure with the compass point east. It could also derive from one who lived outside a settlement to the east.
In the IGI for Norfolk the name is referred to 344 times but the earliest reference is 1517.
In the 1881 census for Norfolk the name occurs 150 times.

ENGLAND/ENGLISH:
ENGLAND/ENGLISH is a name which would normally be found in an area that was not under the control of the Angles or their descendants. Thus an area originally held by Danes (such as York) might consider an outsider to be an Angle or English, as would those north of the border and to the west (Wales or Cornwall). Strangely the surname is fairly evenly distributed throughout the British Isles.
In Norfolk it occurs 3373 times in the IGI with the earliest reference to England or English being in 1090 (possibly used after the Norman conquest to identify a non-Norman who was still of high enough status to be accepted).
In the 1881 census for Norfolk there are 542 occurrences.
